Law of Divine Compensation and Abundance

Marianne Williamson, one of my favorite spiritual writers, has expanded my consciousness with her 2012 book, The Law of Divine Compensation.  Having been raised in a blue collar family, some of the negative beliefs I soaked up that were limiting my abundance included:

“You have to work hard for everything you get”

“Some people get paid way too much for what they do”

“There’s only so much wealth to go around”

“Taking a vow of poverty is honorable”

I was sure there were others, but those were the ones that stood out for me at the time.  And those were the ones that I was being challenged to reassess.  The Law of Divine Compensation basically stated “To whatever extent your mind is aligned with love, you will receive divine compensation for any lack in your material existence”.  Williamson further stated, “The practical issue is whether we choose thoughts that activate or deactivate the Law of Divine Compensation.  We activate it with every loving thought.  We deactivate it when we give more credence to the reality and power of the material world than to the reality and power of love”.

In other words, when we think thoughts like “This is all so-and-so’s fault!”, “I’ll never get ahead”, or “This is such a mess, I’ll never work my way out of it!”, we are deactivating the Law of Divine Compensation.  We are blocking potential solutions and miracles from coming to our aid.  When, in fact, a perceived path out of financial difficulty is thwarted, the Law of Divine Compensation is truly reassuring us that the Universe will simply create a new route.  Our job then is to give up our attachment to HOW we think the solution ought to occur.  We try to dictate how the miracle should happen, when our only job is to let go of believing there’s only one way and open ourselves to the Universe giving us a way we may never have considered.  A quote from the book that captures this idea is “…the Universe intends that you self-actualize, and sometimes that means not getting what you want in order to realize that you’re fine without it–which counterintuitively then paves the way for you to attract that or something better!”

“We can have a grievance or we can have a miracle; we cannot have both”.  In other words, we have to let go of our victim stance about whatever has happened that displeases us and turn that over for Divine intervention.  It’s not our job to figure out HOW the problem is going to be fixed; it’s our job to focus heavily on WHY it’s beneficial to ourselves and others to have it fixed.  That is far more worthy of the investment of your energy than fretting about how you’ve been wronged.

When we think about the world as offering abundance beyond what all of us can utilize, it helps us let go of the limiting concept that when one receives, another must do without.  Any one of us being prosperous is actually a blessing not only for that person, but for everyone else!  When I provide an honorable service for fair pay, it increases the abundance for both of us.  For example, when I provide coaching for someone and they compensate me for that service, oftentimes they reap their own financial benefits through increased efficiency, releasing their own self-limiting beliefs, and opening themselves to the abundance that was just waiting to flow in for them.  Everyone benefits!  Again, my success does not take from yours; in fact, it adds to yours because the exchange of energy between us means we both profit.

Hopefully, this short primer on creating abundance in your life gets you excited about experimenting with this for yourself.  As always, I’d love to hear from you about how the changes you make to your thoughts about abundance yield tangible results in the material world.  Go forth and reap abundance!!
