Cultivating Patience
BLOG POST: Cultivating Patience!
The reason I chose this topic as our focal point for this blog post is so many people are bereft and complaining about not knowing what to do with themselves since they can’t be going Mach 3 with their hair on fire right now as usual; notice I didn’t say “normal”. I think one of the many lessons we’re learning right now is how far afield we’ve drifted with regard to what really matters. We’ve gotten very wrapped up in work, virtual lives, and more to the extreme detriment of our own well-being and the well-being of our planet.
So, as always, when I’m looking at something I don’t want…I took the time to look at its opposite…what I DO want. I want to be more mindful of every moment of every day, to truly live in the moment rather than being way ahead of myself. And one characteristic I’ve discerned about those who do that and do that well is they have patience, not something I was gifted with from the get-go. So I’ve had to practice and learn and explore patience and what all goes into that.
I’ve gathered some quotes on patience that I thought were interesting perspectives. Get comfortable, take a few breaths, and read with the intuitive part of yourself who knows what you need to learn here:
“Make your ego porous. Will is of little importance, complaining is nothing, fame is nothing. Openness, patience, receptivity, solitude is everything.”
― Rainer Maria Rilke
“The word patience means the willingness to stay where we are and live the situation out to the full in the belief that something hidden there will manifest itself to us.”
― Henri J.M. Nouwen
“Have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart. Try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books written in a foreign language. Do not now look for the answers. They cannot now be given to you because you could not live them. It is a question of experiencing everything. At present you need to live the question. Perhaps you will gradually, without even noticing it, find yourself experiencing the answer, some distant day.”
― Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
“Patience is power.
Patience is not an absence of action;
rather it is "timing"
it waits on the right time to act,
for the right principles
and in the right way.”
― Fulton J. Sheen
“Our real blessings often appear to us in the shape of pains, losses and disappointments; but let us have patience and we soon shall see them in their proper figures.” Joseph Addison
So here we begin to see the true nature of patience. It’s the gift we’ve been given to allow us to see other gifts. When we’re rushing to get to the answer, we pay short shrift to the question. The question needs to be savored, dwelled upon, nurtured…then the answer will emerge. Being with the question is an important part of the journey. You don’t win by getting to an answer first; that’s misguided. You deepen your understanding, wisdom, knowing through that Divine Feminine approach of allowing the answers to unfold, not through pursuing them like a starving hunter. Be with the question. So that’s part of what we’re going to do today. Spend time with the question.
So what I’d like us to do today now is set the intention that we’re going to inhabit the current moment only. Being fully present for what is, letting go of what was, or what might be. Just being here now. Breathe that in for a few breaths. Don't get too caught up in "doing it right". Trust that whatever you're doing in the moment is right for you. Step into Curious Observer and just watch your process from that perspective.
Also, once you’ve set your intention to be more fully present in the moment…release it. Spirit may have other ideas for you. Trust that whatever unfolds is in Divine Right Order.
Now I’d like you to breathe. Actually take the time right here, right now for conscious breathing. The breath is a four count breath in and a four count breath out. So it’s paced like this…in, 2, 3, 4 and out, 2, 3,4 and in 2, 3, 4 and out 2, 3, 4. No pause at either end, just continuous, circular breathing deep in the belly.
Just as in meditation, when your mind drifts and you find yourself out of the rhythm of the breathing, just gently return your attention to mindfully breathing deeply and rhythmically.
So get comfortable, keep the breath going, and be your own best curious observer. And I’d like you to imagine being in a safe place. Find a comfortable spot to sit in your safe place and focus on breathing in…and breathing out…receiving this moment fully….fully inhabiting this moment…right here, right now…where you are meant to be.
What can you observe in this moment? What can you learn? What is here for you? Truly settle into this moment, knowing there’s nowhere else you’re supposed to be. How do you know this? Because if there were somewhere else in Divine Right Order for you to be, you would be there. You are right here right now so this IS where you are meant to be.
I’d like you to send out a soul call to the Divine, asking Spirit to help you to take in the concepts most beneficial to you with regard to patience.
We’re going to be exploring two concepts here: faith and trust in the Divine Unfolding AND a sense of timelessness known as Divine Right Order and Timing, both of which make up your experience of patience.
Let’s start with faith and trust. When you come from a place of faith and trust that things are unfolding exactly as they’re meant to, including at the Divine Right Time, patience is a given.
Think about that…FEEL that…when you have complete faith and trust in Divine Right Order and Timing, patience is simplicity itself.
So I’d like you to ask Spirit to share something with you that will help with this faith and trust part of patience. Just ask and be open to receiving.
The second concept that feeds into patience is our perception of time. When one has the sense that time doesn’t matter, again patience comes more easily. What we perceive as things moving along linearly, one after another, Einstein believed it is all actually occurring simultaneously. When you look at the course of a day from that day’s perspective only, it’s very different than when you look at that day from the perspective of a year…or a decade…or millennia. You can begin to see how time becomes a malleable construct.
So again I’d like you to ask Spirit to share something with you that will foster your sense of time as limitless, expansive, and in many ways unimportant with regard to our evolution as souls. Again just ask and be open to receiving that wisdom however it comes to you. Breathing deeply and easily and absorbing all that’s been shared with you.
Asking Spirit if there’s anything else right now to assist you with feeling a depth of patience. Being open to receiving whatever comes. And then, when you’re ready, I’d like you to thank your companion as you prepare to leave your safe place, knowing that you can continue to connect whenever you want simply by wishing it so.
My hope for you is this little journey has expanded your perception of patience and your willingness to continue to cultivate it in your daily life. Our world could use a whole lot more patience right now. Namaste!
